Agios Nikolaos

Located east of Iraklion, Agios Nikolaos is set in the largest natural bay in Crete called Mirabello Bay, named for the mira bella or beautiful view of the sea from the town.

Rethymnon

The third-largest city in Crete is often referred to as scaled-down version of beautiful Chania.  It features a picturesque harbor and strong Venetian and Turkish influences in its architecture.

Elounda

Near Agios Nikolaos is Elounda Gulf, a resort known for its prestigious luxury hotels. Its old charm can be found in its harbor that is lined with cafes and tavernas.

Spinalonga Island

Spinalonga Island is a small island situated off the coast of Elounda and Plaka in the Mirabello Bay. During 1200 AD the Venetians built huge fortifications on this island. In more modern times, from 1903 until the 1950s, lepers from all over Greece were shipped to the island. The suffering of the lepers who inhabited Spinalonga was part of the plot in Victoria Hislop’s bestselling book, The Island.
